What Maximus taught me about living!
It all began in the middle of September of 2004 when this four-legged critter came into my life and forever changed it. From the moment I seen him I knew there was something special about to take place. Little did I know this 4 month old puppy was going to show me things in life I could have never seen before.
Now Picture this……
Waiting at the LA airport to pick up a new dobby puppy that was shipped from Penn. I was so excited to see him. It seemed like it took forever, when the elevator doors open and out comes an airport employee pushing a flat bed cart with a huge dog kennel on top of it. I remember looking into the kennel to find a scared little puppy. Now keep in mind, this is a dobby and he has his ears taped up, making it looked like he had two antennas on top of his head. He was sitting down with his front legs spread out, basically telling me “If you want me, you are going to have to come in here and get me.” And the moment I pulled him out of that kennel, he took over.
What in the world were we going to name this puppy?
I wanted a name that represented power, integrity, character and a name that was not only unique, but meant something. It was finally decided he would be called Maximus, after the movie Gladiator. Little did I know, he was going to show me a thing or two about how he saw things…..
You have heard the saying a million times……
You know, the one that says never judge a book by its cover. If there was ever a dog to be intimidated by, it was Maximus. I mean, he was a 115lbs Doberman Pincher. But once he let you know who he was, he had you hook line and sinker. The thing he taught me was how people deny themselves some of the most incredible experiences in life because of their perception and what they fear.
Have you ever ran the other direction because of fear?…..
I remember walking him down the street and having a woman put her boyfriend between her and Maximus because she was terrified of him. Maximus turned and looked at me as if to say, “why are they afraid of me? I just want to love them.” It broke my heart, because I knew Maximus and how much he loved to love and the people who were afraid of him, denied themselves of an incredible experience. But we all do it in different ways.
Have you ever loved with out reservation?….
I have not always been the person I strive to be today. In fact, I was complete opposite. I was terrified of love, because I was afraid of rejection. And I am grateful that today I cherish most people. I would like to say all, but that is not entirely true. I don’t cherish people who choose to blame others for their pain. There are a few other things I could mention, but you get the point.
Let’s get back to the rejection issue….
You see Maximus was always curious, so he was always walking up to people. He didn’t fear rejection because all he wanted to do was love people. He wanted to play with you and slap you in the face with his 80 grit sand paper tongue. See he taught me is when I am afraid of rejection, I am only thinking of myself and not what I can do for the other person.
And probably the most important thing Maximus taught me……
The quality of our lives is really all about how we see things. Let me give a snap shot of how Maximus viewed what most would consider disgusting. Almost, like clock work, he would go out in the back yard and leave us a treasure and then come bolting into the house to do his three or four victory laps around the center of our living room letting us know he left us a treasure. There is a great lesson in all we do, we just have to prepare ourselves to see it
You see, the fact is…..
Maximus and my grand mother had the same philosophy: To sing like no one is listening, to dance like no one is watching and love like you have never been hurt. Because the last thing Maximus taught me each and every day of his life, was to live and not dwell on yesterday or worry about tomorrow. Because when I had to make the decision to put him to sleep, the only thought I had at that moment was I hope he knew, every moment of his life, how much I appreciated him and how blessed I felt to be the one that Maximus wanted to share his life with.
If Maximus would have been able to talk….
Which I would do for him quit often, I know he would have never complained about anything. The only thing he cared about was showing you know how much he enjoyed being with you. I remember the last run we had together, he held his head high, tongue flapping out the side and ran like a champion, just because that is what he did. He enjoyed everything in life, except being home alone.
If you ever have the chance or wondering…
What it would be like to have a Dobby as a pet, don’t think twice. They are the greatest dogs on earth. And maybe you will experience the things Maximus spent his life showing me. As I complete this, I miss him big time and all I can think of is I hope he knows what he taught me and how much I loved him.
I could write a book, and maybe I will, about my life with Maximus. Everyone who met Maximus fell in love with him. Even though he wanted everyone to know he owned the block, by barking at anything that moved, he loved more then I ever thought was possible. Because of how much of a lose he was to me, it has only taken me over three weeks to be able to write this.
Be sure to look for up and coming posts of our new puppy we will be getting in a couple of months.
If you are a pet lover or just want to leave a comment, please feel free to do so. I would love to see your thoughts
Best wishes,
Jeff Faldalen
PS Having Maximus in my life taught me “To live like my life depends on it” because life is to short to worry about whatever one else thinks

Hi Jeff,
I just saw your post about Maximus. I am so sorry for your loss – I know how much he has meant to you and what it is like to lose a dear 4 legged friend.
Maximus was definitely the impetus that started our relationship when you tweeted about his illness last year. His heart and magnetism were clear both from our conversations and from the wonderful photo of Maximus that you sent me – I’ve shared it with quite a few dog lovers!
Reading about the lessons you learned from Maximus triggered some wonderful memories and lessons from my special friends. “Living like my life depends in it.” is sage advice and one our canine friends come by naturally. Thanks to you and Maximus for the reminder!
Warmly,
Dr. K
P. S. I’ll be eager to see photos of your new puppy
My friend Dr K.
Thank you for stopping by and reminding me of those memories. And more importantly, thank you for your support.
It has been a true joy and pleasure getting to know you over the past year or more.
I remember our first conversations and they are great memories. It is amazing how pet can
bring humans together
I look forward to connecting soon.
Wishing you the best my friend,
Jeff
PS I am eager to show everyone the new puppy pics
Pets give us a opening into the unconditional love of God. They show us much about life and gratitude.
HI Carol,
Thank you for stopping by and sharing your thoughts, I really appreciate it
May God abundantly bless you,
Jeff
Sorry to hear about your loss my friend. Thank God he allows us to have memories that help pull us through, and I sure you have many of Maximus.
Pets and animals can teach us many things, if we would only learn to listen, life could be much better, for many of us.
Specially if we could learn to love and not judge, and accept people as they are.
For with everyone you meet you have something to learn for them, no matter who they are, they bring something to the table.
I think that’s part of why God said love your neighbor, for in doing so you again a full table of knowledge. Which you can use to help guide your life and others.
Hey Don,
Your words are so true. Everyone is are teacher if we look for the lesson.
Thank you for your friendship, support and leaving your thoughts
I has been my true pleasure getting to know you over the years
May God abundantly bless you my brother,
Jeff
As you know Jeff, Duke died a few days after Maximus; we got a puppy, Charlie, a week later. We got Charlie because we had loved Duke so much. Charlie is not Duke….but he is precious and he sure fills a big hole of pain. If we could only all live and love like Dogs! Can’t wait to see your new baby! God Bless!
Hey Lindy,
Yes I remember the conversation very well and I am truly sorry to hear of your loss.
You have always been a dear friend and I really appreciate knowing you. May Charlie
bring you the love only a four legged critter can bring and know you will be in our prayers
wishing you all the blessings you deserve,
Jeff
I am so sorry for your loss, Jeff. Dogs truly are man’s best friends – and to loose your best friend is certainly not easy to deal with.
However the unconditional love Maximus gave you and the life lessons he taught you will forever be with you, and so Maximus will always be with you!
I’m sure everyone that reads your story will understand the point you are making, and put it good to use in their own lives. I certainly do! So you see, Maximus and you will touch and make a positive impact on many people as they read your story. Many thanks for taht!
My friend Simon,
Thank you for leaving such an incredible comment. I appreciate you
and your kind words
I believe Maximus lived for only one purpose and that was to teach us not
to put anything in a box.
A lot of people, including me once upon a time, think Dobermans are mean and will turm
on you, but nothing could be further from the truth. Of course my gardener might not agree
Thank you for your friendship and support
May you be blessed beyond measure,
Jeff
Hi Jeff,
Maximus and so many other of our four legged friends have so many lessons to teach us. Unconditional love being one of them
Thank you for your post and I hope you do write a book about you and Maximus.
Wishing you more Wealth and Riches in every area of your life,
Dexter Black
Hi Dexter,
I appreciate you stopping by and leaving your thoughts with us.
There is nothing in the world to be valued more then unconditional love.
Thank you for the inspiration to write a book. I believe it is only fitting
for others to know how special Maximus was
Wishing you all the best my friend,
Jeff
Hey Brother,
I felt your pain as i read this. Im glad we had spent some time with maximus. Jaryn drew a picture of him for you.
I believe God has a great reward waiting for you soon. Thank you so much for everything that you Renee and Shawn have done for us.
Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass… It’s about learning to dance in the rain. The Rain can stop at any time now.
God Bless you Jeff we Love ya.
Hey John and Sheila,
Thank you for your kind words and the experience of us all dancing in the rain
It has made all of us appreciate things a bit more and I am excited for you to see the new puppy
We appreciate your friendship,
With Love,
Jeff Faldalen
Sorry for your loss, Jeff; very touching story.
We can definitely learn valuable lessons from our pets. Elsie
Hi Elsie,
Thank you for kind words.
It is truly amazing where we find valuable lessons, if we are looking.
Again, thank you for your comment and support
Wish you the best,
Jeff
I am really sorry to hear of your loss brother….
Having 3 dogs myself and one ( named DuDu) passing a few years ago I can surely relate to some of the loss you are experiencing.
A quick story about DuDu. About 4 years ago, for some time, wife and I were looking to conceive a baby, but for whatever reason it never happened. Timing was off, busy at work, my wife was busy with her Ebay business, it just never happened. So as result, we decided to get another puppy and we named him DuDu (which was named after my wife’s company). DuDu, a toy schnauzer, who was cute, smart, playful, always gave unconditional love and he just shined whenever you saw him. My wife just adored him.
A little over a year later of getting him he was accidentally let out by a house sitter and he passed while we were in India. My wife was devastated. She shut down her Ebay business. It took her about 6 month to get out of the house. Oddly soon after, a spiritualist friend, out of the blue said that our puppy was still around spiritually and was waiting to be reincarnated.
It was about 3 months later, my wife found out she was pregnant. Thoughts crossed our minds that, just maybe….hmmmm!
Anyways, my son is 3 now and he does remind us of our DuDu… : ) except for the farting my son does on command.
Not sure if you believe in reincarnation, but I believe God will make things right for your loss and fill your life with the love equal or better. If you believe in reincarnation, know he will be coming back into the world someone beautiful…
God bless you and your family!
Hey Andy,
Thank you for your comment, your awesome story and being the friend you are.
It has been my pleasure getting to know you over the past couple of years.
Its amazing your son is already three and has such an amazing talent
Wishing you the best my friend,
Jeff Faldalen
wow what true words. I was scared to death of him and very quickly realized what a giant marshmellow he was. I loved him after only spending 2 days there I cant imagine how you all feel.
Hang in there. Cant wait to see new puppy pics.
love steph
Hey Steph,
Thank you for the kind words and your support. I think most people had the same reaction to him, until they realized the same thing. He wasn’t much of a guard dog after knowing him. Just a big teddy bear in a big intimidating body.
Can’t wait for you to see the new puppy. Its coming soon
With love,
Jeff Faldalen
Hi Jeff
Being a new kid on the block I didn’t realise that you had lost beautiful Maximus. I know just how you would have felt having lost a few of my own.
God gave us animals for our pleasure and to mirror His unconditional love because we humans mess it up all the time. Maximus fulfilled his calling and will always live on in your heart.
God gave me a vision of one of my dogs in heaven and said to me “All you have to do is ask!” Of course I did and I believe because of this that she will be in heaven waiting for me when its my turn to go home to be with the Lord.
Have fun with the new puppy.
God bless you Jeff
Hi Margaret,
Thank you so much for your kind words. It has been great getting to know you better and better everyday.
The Lord is good and bless me with an awesome dog, that I will never forget.
We just brought the new puppy home this past Friday and I can already tell he is going to bring us a life
time of joy too.
Thank you again for leaving your comments,
Wishing you all the success,
Jeff Faldalen

What a great story- very personable with a solid message. If more people could be like Maximus and my dog Rusty, this world would be a much better place! Hope to chat with you soon
Hi Scott,
Thank you for leaving a comment. It is always great to meet a fellow dog lover.
Yeah if people could live more like dogs imagine where this world would be. The only thing that comes to mind is the word impossible wouldn’t be an excuse, but a challenge
Wishing you the best my friend,
Jeff Faldalen
Really Cool story. And Great name Maximus. One of my favorite movies.
Hi Christopher,

Hi Jeff,
I usually, along with the sorrow, appreciate the fact that I was able to have my dog(s) in my life. If we would stop and really learn from them, what an ever better place we would be in.
Hi Steven,
I really liked your comment. Thank you.
If everyone would learn from dogs, just think how much different this world would be.
Everyone would walk in the realm of living to their fullest potential
Thank you again for stopping by,
Jeff Faldalen
Hey Jeff,
Always love reading good dog stories especially since I got the chance to meet Maximus! Big love bug!
I wish more people would take the time to have, love and learn from dogs, the world would be a better place!
Hope all is well.
Hi Care,
Thank you for stopping by and leaving your comment. Yes Maximus was a big love bug
Just imagine if people loved and lived like dogs, wow that could be a book itself
Wishing you all the best my friend,
Jeff Faldalen
Thanks Jeff for sharing this. Wonderfully insightful. It’s certainly clear than Maximus touched many lives, will always have a very special place in your heart, and was a lucky dog for having had such a loving owner.
